The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results
By Gary Keller with Jay Papasan

If you want to start a new business or a new job or do something different for the New Year I thoroughly recommend this book, which is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller (ie it has major business gravitas). Starting with a Russian proverb, “If you chase two rabbits you will not catch either one,” it goes on to show you in myriad ways why focusing on the one thing that will make a genuine difference to your success is the bee’s knees. Our brains are not able to multitask. Work-life balance is not achievable if we want to be a success. Willpower is finite. These principles may fly in the face of all we want to believe, but learning the power of focusing on one thing at a time has been a life-changer for me.

I have implemented this both in my business and in my personal life – and readers, it works. When I am devoted to the task ahead of me, I am 100% switched on and in the moment and it’s enabled me to get real results.

For me this is the number one productivity tool kit in the form of a book. It’s not the easiest or must fun read and may not be the perfect beach buddy but it is certainly worth the investment of time to read it. I tell anyone who will listen to read this book, particularly those in business or needing some focus. If you struggle to prioritise what is important to you, do this one thing and read The One Thing.
